Mrs. Steve Breninger
Mathematical Studies Instructor
Roosevelt High School
Johnstown, CO 80534

Dear Mr. Breninger:

As I discussed with you last month, I am currently in the process of applying for scholarships and colleges, and I would much appreciate if you would help me with this task. Having had me in your Advanced Placement Calculus class for the last two semesters, you know much of my academics and work values, and it would be a great help to me if you could write me a letter of recommendation that I may use in my application processes.

You have seen me pass what many consider to be the hardest class in the school with a solid A, so you know more than anyone my academic values and work ethic. Having already filled out a recommendation form for me, you would be able to write a letter with more detail and thought than anyone else I could ask. Your letter would be extremely helpful, as I plan to use it to apply for the First Generation Scholarship program at CSU.

Please send the letter of recommendation to Mrs. Maree at RHS and have her send it to Colorado State University by March 31. I sincerely appreciate taking time out of your day to write this letter for me, and if you have any question you can email me at chyde109@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

Cody Hyde

Mrs. Brenda Otteman
Biological Sciences Instructor
Roosevelt High School
Johnstown, CO 80534

Dear Mrs. Otteman:

As you know, I am currently in the process of applying for scholarships and colleges, and I would much appreciate if you would help me with this task. Having had me in your Anatomy and Physiology Class for two semesters, you know much of my academics and work ethic and it would be greatly beneficial to me if you would write me a letter of recommendation that I could use in my application processes.

As you are no doubt aware of the academic prowess I have made in your class over the past two semesters, I think you would be very capable of describing my work ethic and study habits, and how much progress I have made in this particular subject field from last semester to this one. Your recommendation would be able to accurately detail me as a worker and as a person.

Please send the letter of recommendation to Mrs. Maree at RHS and have her send it to Colorado State University by March 31. I sincerely appreciate taking time out of your day to write this letter for me, and if you have any question you can email me at chyde109@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

Cody Hyde

Scholarship Essay

Everyone loves games. You know what else everyone loves? Helping people in need. So I thought, how great would it be if we could play games... while helping people at the same time? And with that sudden epiphany, my partners and I set out to create an epic 24-hour Game-A-Thon to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network (CMN), while simultaneously doing what we love to do.

After going through the... "entertaining"... process of renting out our high school for the weekend, persuading teachers to volunteer to be our hosts, and spreading the word to everybody, our idea finally came into fruition. We had a bigger turnout than expected... at first I thought everyone was just coming as another reason to hang out and play games, but as more and more people came, I realized that wasn't even the reason. I had requested a minimum of a 25 dollar donation for everyone who attended, but very, very few people gave this much... They gave more. In fact, the average donation made was over twice that.

I was impressed, even humbled, by our classmates' willingness to go above and beyond just the bare minimum with their donations to the CMN. I was honored to have helped sponsor such a successful event, to have raised so much money, and to have given everyone such a great time. Even the teachers put aside their usual maturity and had fun with the students, and many people who didn't even participate (and didn't even go to our school) generously donated food and TVs. It was amazing seeing our community band together for one cause like that.

The event was such an incredible, fun, and successful experience, that we are holding another one in just two weeks, and due to the overwhelming success of the first, we are expecting at least twice as many people to show up. That weekend showed me that people really do care about helping causes, and participating in community events is just a fun and engaging way to support them. It certainly sparked an interest in me to participate in and help out with other community events. And that, to me, is the most important thing... realizing what's going on, and actively take part in it.
